There’s a couple of contrivances in horror games that I don’t care for. The first, is the ubiquitous out-of-tune string orchestra that lets you know every time something scary is supposed to be happening. The second is the recent resurgence of heroes who can’t even put up a token resistance to being murdered by the monster of the week. It’s always struck me as a very unnatural way of ratcheting up the tension; A stopgap measure just as artificial as the lack of a jump button and the notorious impassable, knee-high wall. Not every game needs guns, but I balk at any game that won’t let me hit stuff with a stick.
