The Escapist Wins Three 2011 Webby Awards, Including People’s Voice for Best Lifestyle Site

Durham, NC – May 4, 2011 – The Escapist is excited to announce that it has won three 2011 Webby Awards: the People’s Voice Awards for best Lifestyle and best Games-Related, and the 2011 Webby for the best Games-Related website.

The Webby awards are the Internet’s most respected symbol of success and this is the first year that a games-related website was nominated in the Lifestyle category and won the People’s Voice Award. The Escapist being honored in both Games-Related and Lifestyle is an important achievement for the gaming industry that demonstrates how important and influential games have become in entertainment, and society as a whole.

“Winning the People’s Voice Awards in both Lifestyle and Games-Related validates The Escapist‘s strategy of pursuing gaming lifestyle content,” said Alexander Macris, The Escapist‘s publisher and CEO of Themis Media, which owns The Escapist. “No other site on the Internet captures the broad range of interests of today’s gamer like we do.”

“Our victory today has helped show that gaming is the touchstone of today’s youth lifestyle, a lifestyle that will only become more important to advertisers and brands over time,” added Thomas Kurz, co-publisher and Chairman of Themis Media.

The Escapist provides thoughtful editorial content by the most notable writers in interactive entertainment, a spirited community and a wealth of innovative webTV video series, including the critically acclaimed Zero Punctuation. The site has enjoyed several Webby Awards in the Games-Related category in the past, but this is the first year it has been nominated and won a Lifestyle award.

“As much as the endorsement of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences means to us, the People’s Voice votes mean more,” said Russ Pitts, Editor-in-Chief of The Escapist and Content Director of Themis Media. “Without the support of our audience and community, nothing we have accomplished would be possible. This one belongs to them.”
