Notch Pumping Air Into Minecraft‘s Sky Dimension

This article is over 13 years old and may contain outdated information

A dimension made of islands floating in the sky could be coming to Minecraft.

A few tweets from Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson have revealed a possible new dimension for the game tentatively called the “sky dimension.” It looks similar to Minecraft‘s hellish Nether, but is located in the other direction.

“I spent a lot of time today trying to add a floating island dimension,” Persson tweeted. “It did not go well. Performs well, looks ugly.” The next day, he tweeted a link to six screenshots showing what he was working on.

Later, Persson said: “I guess I’ll have to finish it. Consider it confirmed.” If the tweet means anything, the sky dimension is officially a new feature coming to Minecraft sometime in the future (though not in the upcoming 1.6 update).

The Nether added a fast-travel option to Minecraft and also came with the inclusion of ghasts and zombie pigs. If we’re lucky, the sky dimension will replicate these sorts of features.

My guess is that players would once again have to travel to the sky dimension through portals, as with the Nether, but I have a much better idea for getting back down. Water slides. That is all.
