In order to “promote” this year’s Game Developers Conference, videogame-themed comedy troupe Mega 64 was hired to make commercials, with varying success.
Mega 64 has been making short films and commercial parodies with a heavy videogame slant since at least 2006. The trio of Rocco Botte, Derrick Acosta, and Shawn Chatfield originally created a series of half hour shows to air on public television but it was never broadcast. They released a DVD through Something Awful’s publishing company in 2006 and since then Mega 64 has been contracted to create promotional content for Ubisoft games like Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and the Spike Video Game Awards. In 2008 and 2009, the trio made promotional videos for the Game Developers Conference and they recently released three videos for this year’s show.
In the first video, the group makes GDC seem like it’s all about being a gangster, and maybe playing some games. When that one doesn’t work, Mega 64 goes the other and showcases uber-nerdery. They are given one last chance and video #3 is definitely my favorite.
I have no idea why it didn’t get picked.
