The iOS-exclusive Riddick: The Merc Files has just hit the App Store in New Zealand, but it’s not necessarily the Riddick sequel teased earlier this month.
You will, if you were paying attention, recall that Riddick himself, Vin Diesel, recently teased a new game in the series being developed by the Starbreeze team behind the exceptionally good The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay. It’s come to light today that he wasn’t just making noise, as Riddick: The Merc Files is now available on the App Store (in New Zealand, anyway), developed by Gaming Corps, a Swedish studio founded by veterans of – you guessed it – Starbreeze Studios. But it’s probably not the Riddick sequel you were hoping for: It’s an iOS-exclusive mobile game that ties into the recent Riddick film.
Before the disappointment sets in too deeply, however, bear in mind that Diesel actually alluded to this in his conversation with Screen Crush. “There’s a great Riddick app coming out that you’ll be able to play on your iPad,” he said. “But my die-hard gamers want Tigon [Diesel’s game production company] to deliver the third chapter in the Riddick game. And we just, over the past couple of months – just this year – reassembled that team from Starbreeze that brought Escape From Butcher Bay to create the third game.”
Anything is possible, but nervous hand-wringing from other quarters notwithstanding, it seems that Riddick: The Merc Files is very likely the “great Riddick app” Diesel mentioned and then quickly dismissed in order to talk about the Riddick game that people are actually interested in. And hey, The Merc Files might be good – it happens from time to time – but folks looking forward to nothing less than a full-on Riddick FPS probably shouldn’t give up hope just yet.
