Crypt of the NecroDancer Boogies to Early Access and Charities Next Week

Brace Yourself Games will host a Crypt of the NecroDancer tournament next week to benefit several charities ahead of its Early Access launch on July 30.

Rhythm dungeon crawler Crypt of the NecroDancer will launch on Steam as an Early Access title on July 30. Brace Yourself Games has been working on polishing the game over the past few months, and ahead of the game’s Early Access launch, it will host a $11,500 contest for charity next week.

Brace Yourself Games has invited over 70 Twitch streamers to compete in four events for the NecroThon. The streamers are divided among six teams, one for each charity (Charity: Water, Child’s Play, Doctors Without Borders, Make a Wish, SoHumane, and St. Jude). The four events include the Daily Challenge, a once-per-day challenge where a player’s score is the amount of coins at death, Hardcore Mode Speedrun, in which players try to complete hardcore mode as fast as possible, Aria Mode, in which players are only equipped with a dagger and will die when missing a single beat or taking a single hit, and Dance Pad, a hardcore mode with the dance pad. Both teams and individuals will compete. The highest scoring teams will win donations for their charity, and the highest scoring individuals earn a prize for themselves.

Two events are available for on the spot individuals who are not a part of the 72 invited contestants. The two events each have a $500 prize to the individual who completes them first. The first person to complete Aria Mode and the first person to complete hardcore mode with a dance pad will each be winners. Brace Yourself Games noted prize amounts may increase as people will be able to contribute to the prize pool to obtain NecroDancer perks.

The NecroThon runs from July 21 to July 30, when Crypt of the NecroDancer will be available for purchase on Steam. Players move underground through a series of levels to fight enemies and move to new zones, grabbing new equipment and coins along the way while moving to the beat.

Brace Yourself Games showed off Crypt of the NecroDancer at events such as PAX East, where people could play the game on custom dance pads by Precision Dance Pads. These pads are now available for purchase for $300, but Brace Yourself Games also recommends soft dance pads as a cheaper alternative without the custom NecroDancer art.

Crypt of the NecroDancer will have a full launch either later this year or next year. The game is available for PC, Mac, and Linux.
