Director states Uncharted movie should start shooting early next year.
Seth Gordon, the newest director to be tied to the Uncharted film, revealed that they’re likely to begin shooting early next year. He alluded to this as he talked about the hard work he’s putting into his two TV shows The Goldbergs and Marry Me, “I tried to do a chunk at the beginning, and I want to do a chunk here too. It just depends when our actual [Uncharted] start date is actually declared, and then I’ll back out as many episodes as I can do.”
He’s feeling confident the film will begin shooting soon, “I think very early next year. That’s the plan,” given that his team “just got the script to a really good place.”
When pressed for information on who will be taking on the role of Nathan Drake, Gordon says they’re still on the lookout to fill that position, “That’s number one, and then if it’s someone who has an actual jaw, that’s even better. The game is so well done that you need it to live up to that. There’s no way we’d do the inverse of that where it’s somebody famous who can’t [act].” He’s even open to the idea of choosing actors who primarily live on the TV screen, since it worked well for the 2011 movie he directed Horrible Bosses. “There’s a lot of great shows on that expose me to actors I would not have known otherwise.”
Gordon also revealed that the movie will pay tribute to the games’ mythology while also not just rehashing the stories already told. In fact, it’ll likely take the more interesting portions of the first game Drake’s Fortune and work from there, “I love the complexity and frankly the sophistication of the storytelling in the game, and we aspire to that–but don’t want to tell the exact same story, of course–so something that doesn’t break the rules of what it did but expands. Because I feel like the people who play the games and know them well don’t want to just see the same story told. You want extra shades.”
The film will be shot in several exotic locations to match the game’s numerous settings.
There’s been a lot of movement around the production of the Uncharted movie already. Announcements of the film began in 2008, with Avi Arad as the first to begin working with Sony on the development of the film as a producer. In 2010 David O. Russell was slated to be the director of the film. As fans became more aware of Russell’s visions, such as having Mark Wahlberg play Nathan Drake and it centering around a secret family that police the trade of antiquities and relics, many had little hopes for the movie. In 2011 Russell walked away from the film and was replaced one month later by director Neil Burger. Everything seemed fine until August 2012 when it was announced Burger had also walked away from the film, to be replaced by Seth Gordon in 2014.
