Universal has announced that the trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey’s film adaptation is now the most-watched launch video in history with over 100 million views and counting.
According to Universal, the trailer for the film adaptation of E. L. James’ 2011 novel, Fifty Shades of Grey, has made history in its first week as the most-watched launch movie trailer earning over 100 million views across YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and other social sites. “Fifty Shades Of Grey trailers are pulling monumental views,” claims RelishMix CEO Marc Krazen. Across just the two YouTube channels owned by Universal, the trailer has already passed over 33 million views. The trailer uploaded on Universal’s YouTube channel garnered more than 13 million views, while its UK counterpart did even better with close to 20 million views. “Add to that ripped and reposted versions on movie fan channels. It’s unprecedented for a film that’s six months out,” Krazen notes.
As for social media, the trailer fared just as well. Before the 2 1/2-minute teaser was shown officially, the 15-second teaser premiered unannounced on Beyonce’s Instagram account (with over 14 million followers) on Saturday, July 19, where it ran up over 443,000 “likes” and over 85,000 comments. When the full trailer dropped on July 24 at 8:15 a.m. ET, it instantly became the most-watched trailer on YouTube that day. It racked up over 98,000 mentions per hour on Twitter and was the no.1 Google-trending topic in the US, Canada, UK, France and Germany. An additional 13 million uploads were viewed on various other platforms including Yahoo, IMDB, and Apple. Aside from that, over 900,000 trailer views from unofficial YouTube uploads were also seen, with Universal saying it got an additional 40 million additional views on Facebook across the studio’s domestic and international channels, as well as Beyonce’s Facebook page where the vid alone amassed over 446,000 likes, and 222,000 shares.
Fifty Shades of Grey stars Dakota Johnson (21 Jump Street) as Anastasia Steele and Jamie Dornan (Once Upon a Time) as Christian Grey, with directorial duties handled by Sam Taylor-Johnson for a February 13, 2015 theatrical release.
