Iconic henchmen to return for sequel to profitable but poorly-received reboot
Despite being a fairly sizable moneymaker at the box-office (it was the only film to briefly unseat Marvel’s mega-hit Guardians of The Galaxy during it’s big initial bow) the “gritty” Michael Bay-produced reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seemed to disappear pretty quickly from the pop-culture consciousness; with oldschool fans roundly despising the film and younger audiences seeming far more enamored of the new Nickelodeon animated version.
But, whether you remembered they existed or not, pretty-much everyone but Shredder survived the first film and are coming back for a sequel under a new director (Earth to Echo’s Dave Green). Now, French film site Omeltte have learned that a pair of familiar foes from the 1980s animated series will be joining them: Bebop & Rocksteady.
Originating in the 1980s animated series principally responsible for launching TMNT from an obscure underground comic book to a globally-known kids’ entertainment brand, Bebop and Rocksteady are a mutant warthog and rhinoceros loyal to Shredder and/or The Foot Clan. Their appearance was already hinted at in October by one of the film’s concept artists. There is no word on what the storyline (if any) of the film will be.
