“We want to get the game in your hands as soon as possible so you can experience that unforgettable version of a haunted Tokyo that we’ve been hard at work building,” Tango said in a statement. “At the same time, we’re also focused on protecting the health of everyone at Tango. Our new release window will give us time to bring the world of Ghostwire to life as we’ve always envisioned it.”

Ghostwire: Tokyo was announced during E3 2019. In 2020, it was revealed that it would be a timed console exclusive for PlayStation 5. Deathloop is also in a similar timed exclusivity deal. Even though both games are technically Xbox Games Studios titles now that Microsoft owns ZeniMax, the timed exclusivity was already announced before Microsoft acquired both Tango Gameworks and Arkane Studios.

Tokyo: Ghostwire follows a player character as their supernatural powers begin to manifest due to otherworldly spirits called Visitors having invaded Tokyo. Players must fight the spirits throughout the city while uncovering the truth behind these events and why Tokyo’s citizens have disappeared.

Tokyo: Ghostwire was originally seemingly slated for an October 2021 release, but now that it has been delayed, it will launch sometime in early 2022 for PC and PlayStation 5. Xbox Series X|S will receive the game later.
