The Quarry is an upcoming summer camp horror game from the minds behind Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology. Arriving next month, the title is more akin to the former: a more complete, less episodic adventure. While we have already seen a cinematic trailer for the game, we haven’t seen any gameplay. That has changed today with publisher 2K uploading an almost six-minute The Quarry gameplay trailer. Interested players can now get a taste of what the horror title has in store.
The director of The Quarry, Will Byles, breaks down the footage. Inspired by ’80s horror films, The Quarry will let you play nine camp counselors throughout the journey. Decisions you make will affect the characters’ relationships with each other and who lives and who dies. There are many variables at play, both subtle and dramatic, and repercussions will either be immediate or happen later. With so many outcomes, The Quarry has high replay value, making multiple playthroughs a must for anyone that wants to witness everything the game has to offer.
Curious gamers will have the option to explore the campgrounds as they play as the counselors. Doing so will be beneficial, as clues and collectibles can be uncovered. Accessibility options are also important to the developers, with the ability to lengthen decision timers being one of the most important.
The gameplay trailer also outlines the many ways to play The Quarry. Online multiplayer has you invite up to seven others to watch your playthrough and vote on important decisions. Couch co-op gives you the ability to assign players to different counselors and pass the controller to them when it is their turn. And Movie Mode lets you play the role of director, where you make presets like assigning each character attributes (composed, sympathetic, etc.) or potentially choosing whether everyone lives or dies, and then you sit back and enjoy the game like a movie.
The Quarry is shaping up to be quite a narrative-driven journey. The wealth of gameplay options makes it seem like an ’80s-style Until Dawn with modern touches. I’ll be sure to check it out when it launches on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X | S on June 10, 2022.
