The gang’s half here! THR is reporting that Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio will be returning to the roles of Matt Murdock / Daredevil and Kingpin once again in the upcoming Disney+ Marvel series, Echo. However, the slightly bigger intrigue is a reported rumor that Daredevil will be searching for an old ally in the series, which would be none other than Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, whom he teamed up with in Netflix’s The Defenders.
Having Charlie Cox Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio Kingpin return in Echo isn’t that big a surprise. The character of Echo, who debuted in Hawkeye, has always been closely tied to Daredevil. Plus, both actors reprised their roles already in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Cox showing up in Spider-Man: No Way Home and D’Onofrio seemingly dying in Hawkeye. Just how they’ll be involved with the story isn’t clear. The series will follow Maya Lopez / Echo, played by Alaqua Cox, as she returns home to connect to her roots and struggles to leave behind the criminal life we saw in Hawkeye. The anti-hero already threw down with Kingpin, so he may once again be the big bad guy here with Daredevil tailing him.
The true surprise is if Ritter returns. That would signal that Marvel is indeed looking to pull the Netflix series into the fold, especially as they brought all the shows over to Disney+ earlier this year. Just how they’ll pull it off is still a big question mark. The Netflix series were dark, gritty, and violent, and that doesn’t jive with the MCU look (outside of Multiverse of Madness, maybe). If Kingpin’s role in Hawkeye is any indication, then they’ll be drastically changing the tone as D’Onofrio’s character went from a complex, troubled villain to what basically amounted to a stereotypical comic book supervillain.
Still, the question lingers of if we could see the rest of the Netflix cast eventually come back. Do we want that? Because if they bring back everyone else, that means Iron Fist may come too, and the only reason to do that would be to kill him.
