Is Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) Crossplay or Cross-Platform?

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) is officially available on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, and as the game supports multiplayer dungeoneering, you may be wondering if it has crossplay or cross-platform support.

Baldur’s Gate 3 doesn’t support crossplay right now. That means whether you’re on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC, you can only play with people on your platform.

Does Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) Have Cross-Platform?

Baldur’s Gate 3 does support cross-platform saves, as you can carry your progress between platforms. You need to create and link a free Larian account and log in on each platform you play on.

You can enable the function by going to Options in the Gameplay tab, navigating to Save Options, and selecting “Cross-Save.” The game’s Xbox Series X|S launch was a little rocky, and Larian was advising people to log in to ensure their saves were preserved.

So, you can go to someone else’s house, and with your logon, carry on where you left off, regardless of their platform. At least you can if you’re on console because Patch 7, out now for PC, has thrown a spanner in the works.

Patch 7 adds in mod support, as well as plenty of other fixes, but it’s not arriving on console until October 2024. If you’ve updated your game, or Steam/GOG Galaxy has updated it for you, you’re on Patch 7. However, the console versions are on Patch 6, so their saves are incompatible. That means, while you can transfer saves between PlayStation and Xbox, you can’t transfer anything to PC.

Will Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) Get Crossplay ?

The good news is that crossplay is still in the works. Back in July of 2023, Larian’s Director of Publishing, Michael Douse, stated that “Crossplay is WIP but not for launch. It was never planned for launch itself, but is very much planned for later.” He reiterated this sentiment in a September 2023 interview with Eurogamer, stating, “We don’t want to put a date on it until we’re sure.”

And a year later? It’s still not here, which has led to some fans getting a little antsy, partly because it was believed that Patch 7 was going to be the final patch. However, Larian has confirmed that there are more patches on the way, and it’s still working on crossplay. A recent community update explains:

“We are still working on bringing crossplay to Baldurā€™s Gate 3, and like Patch 7, this requires a lot of work and testing before we’re prepared to release it into the wild.”

So, the answer to whether Baldur’s Gate 3 has crossplay is no, but it’s in the works. Don’t let that put you off buying Baldur’s Gate 3, though – it’s one of the finest CRPGs in years.
