Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster Release Date Reveals Early 2024 Launch

Nightdive had previously announced that its 4K remaster was set to release sometime before the end of the year, so today’s announcement is technically a delay. This isn’t just any old release date, however. The date actually marks the 29-year anniversary of the game’s original launch. What better way to celebrate Star Wars: Dark Forces than by playing a brand-new, updated version?

When Nightdive announced its Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster, it promised an updated port that improves the visuals without losing any of the original experience’s Doom-like, first-person shooter gameplay. Some of the enhancements include up to 4K visuals at 120fps with better lighting and textures, too. The project, created with the studio’s KEX engine, is also said to include advanced 3D rendering, modern gamepad support, trophies, achievements, and more.

“In the first Star Wars FPS video game, players assume the role of Kyle Katarn, a defector of the Galactic Empire turned mercenary for hire,” the Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster Steam page summary says. “Katarn joins the Rebel Alliance’s covert operations division tasked with infiltrating the Galactic Empire, where he discovers the secret Dark Trooper Project. The development of this powerful new series of Imperial battle droids and power-armored stormtroopers stands to strengthen the Empire’s grip on the galaxy unless Katarn and the Rebel Alliance intervene.”

Our first few glimpses of the game do promise a cleaner-looking take on LucasArts’ 1995 FPS. Look forward to seeing the Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster in action when it comes to PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox consoles early next year.
