Joaquin Phoenix Takes Golden Globe for Joker Performance, 1917 Wins Best Film

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Awards season is in full swing, and that means we all get to watch celebrities thank a bunch of people we don’t know and tear up at how nice a guy Tom Hanks is. That was basically all the Golden Globes was last night as they announced the Hollywood Foreign Press’s favorite films, actors, and shows for the year. The two least surprising results were Joaquin Phoenix snatching the Globe for Best Actor in a Drama for his turn as Joker in Joker and Renee Zellweger picking up the award for Best Actress in a Drama for playing Judy Garland in Judy. They both seem like the easy shoe-ins from here on out, whether you agree with the choice or not.

More unexpected was the success of 1917. The single-shot WWI film not only landed the award for Best Motion Picture – Drama during the night but also saw Sam Mendes picking up Best Director, an honor that was thought to be going to Martin Scorsese for The Irishman. Scorsese’s movie took home no awards, a blow to Netflix, who was hoping it would bring them a lot of trophies this year and spent money on it accordingly. The biggest winner of the night, however, turned out to be Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood. The movie netted three awards including Best Screenplay (Quentin Tarantino), Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, and Best Supporting Actor (Brad Pitt).

You can read the full list (via Vanity Fair) of winners below, but another surprising win to point out was Missing Link‘s triumph over three Disney films, all of which made more money and are part of franchises that have won the honor before.
