Cyberpunk 2077 Delayed by Five Months

CD Projekt Red has revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t going to make its April release date. The developer released a statement explaining the reasoning for the delay, saying that the game’s launch has been pushed to Sept. 17 instead of its originally planned date of April 16. Cyberpunk 2077 is “complete and playable,” but CD Projekt Red says it needs more time for playtesting, fixing, and polishing. These extra “precious months” are being used to ensure the game is the studio’s “crowning achievement for this generation.”

Cyberpunk 2077’s delay gives the team more time to polish the game, but this is only one benefit of the release date push. Launching in September now gets the game out of the way of the tidal wave of games hitting in the middle of 2020. Doom Eternal, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Persona 5 Royal, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and Resident Evil 3 are just a few of the titles releasing between March and April, making this year one of the most hectic (and exciting) times for games in recent memory. However, CD Projekt Red’s futuristic RPG will now have to share September with Marvel’s Avengers, seeing as that game was also delayed just a few days ago. That said, and even considering some games slated for 2020 have not been given release dates, this does help spread gaming in 2020 out just a bit more.

Cyberpunk 2077 will now hit Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One Sept. 17, 2020.
