How Many Seasons Will House of the Dragon Have?

Helaena Targaryen in House of the Dragon Season 2

There will be four seasons of House of the Dragon it was confirmed after the conclusion of Season 2. This was first announced by showrunner Ryan Condal in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The showā€™s third season was already announced before Season 2ā€™s premiere.

The series is based on George R.R. Martinā€™s Targaryen history book Fire & Blood, but so far it has only adapted a small portion of the overall story. Given where the story picked up, it does seem that it will only adapt this certain time in the Targaryen history, and because of that four seasons seems like the perfect number. Anymore could lead to the show dragging more than it already has.

House of the Dragon should end at the conclusion of The Dying of the Dragons chapters in Fire & Blood. Of course, this is just speculation, so we’ll need to wait and see to know for sure, but with the season count being announced, it seems most likely. Season 1 of House of the Dragon adapted its story from two chapters of Fire & Blood, and the second season had a similarly slow pacing. If we look at this pacing Season 4 would seem like the point where this specific Targaryen story would come to an end, so we should get the entire story of this time from Fire & Blood during House of the Dragon’s run.

House of the Dragon Season 2 is available to stream on Max with both the first and second seasons ready to binge right now.
