The New Mutants is one of the unluckiest films ever made. Through no fault of its own, it has been delayed multiple times and, due to cable broadcast contracts, can’t move straight to streaming. Now Disney, who inherited the film in the Fox buyout, has announced that the movie has been pushed again to Aug. 28, 2020.

The New Mutants has now had five release dates, starting with April 13, 2018 when the film was a 20th Century Fox release and was part of the studio’s attempt to go darker and grittier with their X-Men films. However, the film was delayed until Feb. 22, 2019, with murmurs of the Disney buyout on the horizon. The film then got pushed again due to the buyout to Aug. 2, 2019, and finally to April 3, 2020. That seemed to be its final release date (A new trailer was even released.) until coronavirus hit and Disney put the film on hold indefinitely.
Aug. 28 isn’t a sure-fire release date either for The New Mutants. With states opening up piecemeal, and theaters needing to maintain social distancing if and when they do open, it’s up in the air whether or not movie theaters will even be open enough for Disney to release the film then. Disney is being optimistic, however, as it even has Mulan penned in to open on July 21. Fingers crossed that we’ll finally get to see Josh Boone’s horror-centric effort in August, even if Disney isn’t all that impressed with it.
