The Old Guard Netflix Trailer Delivers Charlize Theron Living Forever

Netflix is ramping up for its next big action release with the first trailer forĀ The Old Guard, a film about an elite unit of immortal soldiers who defend the world from evil. The film stars Charlize Theron as Andy, the leader of the ragtag group, who finds a new recruit, Nile (KiKi Layne), as their secret existence begins to unravel thanks to social media and nonstop surveillance.

The movie is based on the acclaimed comic series of the same name and clearly features plenty of gunfights and battles. On the whole, the trailer itself looks pretty bland and Gina Prince-Bythewood has never directed an action film before, with her best-known credit being Love & Basketball. It’s unclear how this film will set itself apart from the pack of badass military-type movies out there, though having Theron lead the cast is a good start.

The rest of the cast is rounded out by Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Van Veronica Ngo, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. That last one appears to be the man after the immortals so that he can turn their immortality into a weapon. For having such an interesting premise, the film doesn’t seem to be doing too much interesting with it. But much like with 6 Underground, it appears Netflix is aiming for a franchise here, and maybe we’ll get a bit more of the team’s past — hinted at in flashbacks here — in future outings.

There is also not much else coming out to watch thanks to the coronavirus, so any action is good action in a drought like this. The Old GuardĀ will land on Netflix on July 10.
