Time to break out the age-old question of whether you write Spider-Men or Spider-Mans. As Marvel’s multiverse starts heating up, there’s a new unconfirmed report of epic proportions that both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield have signed on for Spider-Man 3 as a live-action Spider-verse kicks off. This report comes on the back of both Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr. Strange and Jamie Foxx’s Electro being in the film, lending at least a little bit of credence to it.
FandomWire reported the news, citing its inside sources, but it hasn’t been verified by any of the trades so continue to take any reports you hear with a grain of salt. The site claims that talks for Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to join are now over, and they have both officially signed on to Spider-Man 3. The pair may not just be quick cameos either, with the two actors said to be involved in defeating a plethora of villains from across Spidey’s many universes in the third act. This would all occur thanks to Dr. Strange’s ability to jump universes as we will first see in Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
FandomWire, presumably from the same source, is also reporting that the Green Goblin will return for the film, but it’s unclear if Willem Dafoe will play the character. The Scorpion is also said to make his first costumed appearance in the movie after being teased in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Kraven the Hunter will debut inĀ Spider-Man 3 before his own feature film comes out. This would tie Sony’s Spidey-villain universe closer to the MCU films than we ever thought, directly connecting them far more than you would think Disney/Marvel would allow given its lack of control over the characters.
All of this is a massive rumor, and even if it is true, it probably won’t be confirmed anytime soon as Sony and Marvel would like to at least pretend it’s a surprise. Spider-Man 3 is currently set to release on Dec. 17, 2021.
