One of the best, though brief, parts ofĀ Thor: Ragnorok is that Matt Damon, king of the random cameo, makes a cameo in the opening scene. Now, according to a local Australian news site (via IGN), Matt Damon will be returning in some way for Thor: Love and Thunder. The report says that Damon and his family were seen disembarking a private jet in Sydney this past weekend and heading off to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine before being let into Australia. This is reportedly all for shooting scenes on Thor: Love and Thunder, which is filming down under.
Just what he’ll be doing in the new movie is entirely unclear, but going through a 14-day quarantine for a small cameo seems like a lot of effort. Damon had this to say when arriving: “I’m so excited that my family and I will be able to call Australia home for the next few months. Australian film crews are world-renowned for their professionalism and are a joy to work with so the 14 days of quarantine will be well worth it.” Obviously, that’s not giving away too much.
InĀ Thor: Ragnorok Damon played an actor portraying Loki in a play about the events ofĀ Thor: The Dark World, in which Loki supposedly sacrifices himself for the good of the universe. Damon does a fantastic job hamming it up as Loki dies, turning his heroic sacrifice up to 11. In the end, that kind of tips Thor off to the fact that all is not right in Asgard, and he eventually discovers that Loki is still alive. Damon’s actor character doesn’t reappear for the entire film, though it can now be assumed he escaped Asgard’s destruction and Thanos’ rampage at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War. Maybe he’s set up a community theater in the quaint fishing town we saw in Avengers: Endgame. Then again, maybe he’s just doing a different random character for a cameo.
Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled for release on May 6, 2022.
