Family is all about the ties that bind. And in November’s #7, artist Carlo Barberi joins the New Mutants creative family in an arc that’s suitably entitled “The Ties That Bind”. Barberi spoke with Newsarama about New Mutants and more.
“After Impulse was canceled I started work on a four-issue Batman story for DC [more on that in a second],” Barberi said when asked how he got the New Mutants gig. “I knew at the time my schedule was going to be open after the Batman project, so I started to inquire at Marvel. I sent in some samples, but I didn’t hear from the company.
“At first it seemed like I was going to hit a dry spell. Working as a freelancer, sometimes you run into times without work. This being said, I really felt that my work on the DC Batman project was some of my best yet. I really wanted to continue in this regard, but there continued to be a lack of work in my near future. So, I started to work with a friend on a creator-owned book from Image called Alternation. This book, which I am very excited about, allowed me to continue to grow artistically. It also allowed me to stay positive and focused on comics.
