Nintendo announced Code Name: STEAM as an entirely new IP for its secret 3DS title.
When word got out that Nintendo was revealing a new 3DS title at E3, rumors of many of its major franchises coming to the system started to spread, but none could have predicted the actual result. Nintendo has just revealed Code Name: STEAM, a brand new IP from Tactical RPG legends Intelligent Systems, known for the Fire Emblem and Advance Wars series.
Code Name: STEAM will be a cell-shaded Tactical RPG that takes place in London in an alternate-universe steampunk 19th century. STEAM stands for “Strike Team Eliminating the Alien Menace,” a special force of heroes put together by president Abraham Lincoln to defend the world from alien invaders.
“As you can tell from my history I have been working with Intelligent Systems for a long time and became a big fan of turn-based strategy, but I’ve always wanted to share these games with more people; this has been quite a challenge for me,” said lead developer Hitoshi Yamagami, whose previous credits include Xenoblade Chronicles and the Pokemon series.
Code Name: STEAM‘s art director Takako Sakai says that the game’s cartoony visual design was influenced by Silver Age comics, and the soundtrack is being composed by Advance Wars composer Taishi Senda.
“The goal of this game was to make a strategy game that would be as accessible to as many people as possible,” added creative director Paul Patrascu.
The game is currently slated for a 2015 release window.
