Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Netflix‘s new show,Ā Sweet Tooth, is about a deadly virus spreading across the world and causing civilization to collapse and humanity to turn against each other. It sounds like the same thing we’ve seen a million times, but Sweet ToothĀ makes it seem fresh with a bit of fantasy aspects sprinkled in and a small boy who is half-deer. Sweet Tooth dropped its first Netflix teaser trailer today, and it looks absolutely magical.
Based on the comic book of the same name from DC Comics written by Jeff Lemire, Sweeth Tooth on Netflix looks like a strange hybrid of typical post-apocalyptic fare and a magical coming-of-age fantasy story. The series takes place years after “The Great Calamity” tumbled the entire world as hybrid human-animal children began to be born and a virus swept through humanity. The show follows titular Sweet Tooth / Gus (Christian Convery) as he embarks on “an adventure through the lush, dangerous world left behind, searching for the meaning of home.” Along the way he’ll befriend a wandering loner who will help him survive.
āWe wanted to make a show that offers escape and adventure, where nature is reclaiming the world and in many ways it feels like a fairytale,” said the show’s executive producer, writer, director, and co-showrunner, Jim Mickle. “Sweet Tooth is a new kind of dystopian story; itās very lush and hopeful. We want people to come into this world where thereās beauty and hope and adventure. This is a sweeping story ā we ride on trains, climb mountaintops, run through forests. This is a show about what makes a family, what home really means, and why itās important to keep faith in humanity.ā
The series is being produced by Susan Downey, Robert Downey, Jr., Amanda Burrell, and Linda Moran. Alongside Convery it stars Nonso Anozie (Tommy Jepperd), Adeel Akhtar (Dr. Aditya Singh), Aliza Vellani (Rani Singh), Stefania LaVie Owen (Bear), Dania Ramirez (Aimee Eden), Neil Sandilands (General Abbot), and Will Forte (Father). Of course, that gravelly, sexy voice you hear narrating the trailer is James Brolin, who will narrate the entire show as well.
Sweet Tooth will premiere on Netflix on June 4. Check out the first-look images below.
