Microsoft Still Reaching For 10 Million

Microsoft still hopes to reach 10 million Xbox 360’s sold by the end of this year, believing that being first to achieve double digits will be first in the market.

“In every other generation, the first guy to 10 million consoles was the number one seller in the generation. Did we just get an even better opportunity to be the first guy to 10 million? Yeah, of course we did,” said Steve Ballmer, speaking to Fortune after the PS3 was delayed in March.

Microsoft CFO Christopher Lidell said in a recent NASDAQ analyst conference in London that, “We also believe we can sell 10 million Xbox 360 units by the end of the Christmas season.”

Resting at 6 million units sold worldwide in September, Microsoft would need to gain a lot of ground to make up the difference in November and December. “The key is we’re in stock, we’re available, we’re delivering well to retail,” said Peter Moore to Bloomberg. “Certainly the consumer is recognizing the fact that we have a great price point as well as 160 games available and that flies in the face of our competition.”

NPD sales numbers for North America will be released tomorrow.
