The long-awaited epic sci-fi RPG Mass Effect hit North American shelves today, with releases in Europe and throughout the rest of the world to follow over the week.

Developed by BioWare, the company behind hit RPGs including Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire, the new Xbox 360 exclusive combines a deep and engrossing storyline with intense tactical combat, driven by high-definition graphics and an innovative conversation system featuring the voices of actors Seth Green, Marina Sirtis, Keith David, Lance Henriksen and others.

Mass Effect is like playing a movie! The magic of videogames bridges science fiction, intense combat and intriguing storylines to create an emotional connection between players and their characters,” said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president at Mass Effect publisher Microsoft. “Mass Effect is the latest example of our commitment to bringing original and captivating titles to fans everywhere.”

Players take on the role of Commander Shepard, a human member of the elite Spectre organization who becomes embroiled in conflict that could ultimately destroy all life in the galaxy. The game is already being called one of the best of 2007, receiving a perfect 10 score and an Editor’s Choice Award from Official Xbox Magazine as well as “Best Console Game” and “Best Role Playing Game” at the 2007 Game Critics Awards.

Mass Effect is available in both a standard and Limited Collector’s Edition release, and has been rated M (Mature) by the ESRB. As part of the launch, the Sci Fi Channel will be airing Sci vs. Fi: Mass Effect at 11 pm EST on November 20 that will examine both the technology and the creativity behind the development of Mass Effect. Program details are available at SciFi.com, and more information about the game can be found at masseffect.bioware.com.
