Rockstar Wins U.K. Appeal

This article is over 17 years old and may contain outdated information

Videogame publisher Rockstar Games won a reclassification appeal against the BBFC in the U.K. for its controversial title Manhunt 2.

In a close 4-3 vote, the Video Appeals Committee decided in favor of the publisher, whose title was de facto banned from sale in the country after the BBFC refused to rate it. The BBFC can now either pursue the ban by taking the case to the High Court or grant an 18+ rating. The agency has said it will defer decision-making until it sees the full report.

“We won’t make a decision until we’ve seen the full printed judgement, which we’re expecting this week,” BBFC Spokeswoman Sue Clark said.

For its part, Rockstar said it was “pleased” by the appeal decision and supported an “effective” rating system. It did not, however, make public any plans for a U.K. release.

“We are pleased that the decision of the VAC has recognised that Manhunt 2 is well within the bounds established by other 18+ rated entertainment,” a company statement said.
