Everyone’s favorite blue Erinaceinae is coming to everyone’s favorite digital music device, as Sega has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog is now available for the iPod.
Sega has released its flagship title for the new iPod Nano with video, the iPod Classic and the fifth generation iPod. Redesigned specifically for the iPod, the game can be purchased at downloaded for $4.99 from 22 iTunes Stores worldwide. The game can also be given as a gift, in the same fashion and music and videos, via the “Gift This Game” button.
“Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most beloved videogame characters of all time,” Sega America President Simon Jeffery said, “and with the installed based that iPod enjoys Sonic now becomes available to a whole new group of casual and hardcore gamers just in time for the holidays.”
First introduced in 1991 as a rival to Nintendo’s famous Mario, Sonic is now Sega’s most recognizable videogame character, and along with its multi-million selling game franchise the character has also spawned animated series and comic books and has appeared in various television shows. Despite its roots in Sega’s early 90s efforts against Nintendo, Sonic will be appearing in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Brawl, marking the first appearance (along with Konami’s Solid Snake) of a third-party character in the Super Smash Bros. series.
