Sony Japan Ditches Two PS3 Models in Hopes of Profitability

This article is over 16 years old and may contain outdated information

Sony is phasing out two iterations of the PS3 in Japan.

The 20 GB and 60 GB version are to be discontinued after a final shipment this month, as the company focuses on pushing the 40 GB model. While the 20 GB and 60 GB models were released for Japan in November 2006, the 40 GB version was launched one year later.

The 40GB model is a stripped-down version of its pricer counterparts and lacks backwards compatibility.

The move appears to be aimed at making the PS3 profitable next year, a goal Sony official Kaz Hirai announced earlier in the week.
