Activision was the top-ranked console and handheld publisher for the U.S. market in calendar year 2007, the company announced today.

According to year-end NPD Group numbers, the publishing giant held a record 17.7 percent of the market share, a 7.2 percent rise over the same period the previous year. Activision’s Guitar Hero was the top-selling franchise for the year, powered by Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, which was the number one title across all platforms in both dollars and units sold, despite not being released until the end of October.

Wrapping up the year on a high note, Activision captured both the number one and number three spots on the sales chart for December with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and the hit FPS Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, according to the NPD.

Activision posted net revenues of $1.5 billion for the fiscal year ended March 2007, and recently announced high levels of revenue generation for each quarter since. “For the first time in our history, we were the No. 1 U.S. publisher for the calendar year,” said Activision Chairman and CEO Robert Kotick. “We are well on our way to delivering 16 years of record revenue growth and by far our most profitable year ever.”
