Developer and game engine creator Epic Games announced its acquisition of the studio behind the Xbox Live Arcade hit Undertow.
Epic Vice President Mark Rein said his company’s acquisition of Chair Entertainment Group came after seeing what the team could do with the Unreal Engine.
“Chair’s stylized approach to creating games is further enhanced by their ability to stretch our technology in new directions that not only helps in creating amazing gaming experiences, but also demonstrates the power and versatility of the Unreal Engine. We are thrilled to bring the Chair team into the Epic family, and look forward to working with them to create original new games that continue to innovate and inspire,” said Rein.
Chair likewise expressed appreciation for Epic’s own efforts. CEO Ryan Holmes said his company “has long admired Epic for its ability to shape the game industry with its innovative technology and first-rate video game offerings.”
Chair was founded in 2005 by Donald and Geremy Mustard, who engineered the side-scrolling underwater 2D shooter Undertow for Xbox Live in November 2007. Chair will retain its name and develop new IPs using Epic’s engine.
