Norse mythology is all over the damn place. Like zombies, romantic vampires, and heroes with bows and arrows that haunted this decade, the pantheon of Aesir gods, elves, and frost giants are seemingly the fashionable staple of modern blockbuster entertainment. The most notable incarnation of these loose adaptations is Marvelās Thor obviously, but then thereās Vikings on television, the upcoming Vinland Saga anime, and games like God of War and Hellblade: Senuaās Sacrifice leveraging the mythos as a setting to tell incredible stories full of ostentatiously furry clothing. Now the biggest historically minded video game series of all time is gearing up for its own ominous muttering about Ragnarok.
Assassinās Creed is rumored to be going full Norse mythology with its next major entry. Resetera blogger dex3108 reposted a leak found on internet nightmare zone 4Chan that included details on the next Assassinās Creed and even early build screenshots. Brace yourselves for a massive info dump.
According to dex3108: āAssassinās Creed (codenamed) Kingdom [is] planned to come cross gen [in] 2020; [the] actual name is Assassinās Creed Ragnarok; [the] main character is [an] ally of Ragnar Lodbrok and aids in the formation of [the] Great Heathen Army; [the] map is split into several kingdoms encompassing all of Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland; Kingdoms are split into regions that can hold settlements; settlements have some customization and in game economy systems; large scale āconquestā battles return, and can be used to weaken enemy hold on regions and parts of the story; [the] player does become an assassin and use [a] hidden blade; First Civ lore is a bit less than [Assassinās Creed] Odyssey, [but will include] finding a vault and Mjolnir.ā
Assassinās Creed Ragnarok is primarily being developed by Ubisoft Montreal. The title is headed by creative director Ashraf Ismail (Assassinās Creed IV: Black Flag, Origins) and narrative director Darby McDevvit (Assassinās Creed: Revelations, Black Flag), and it appears to maintain the seriesā recent focus on RPG character development, exploration, and loot.
Exciting stuff if the rumor is true. The blog post corroborates the prior Assassinās Creed info being drip-fed to us. A The Division 2 easter egg hinted that the next Assassinās Creed would be about Vikings, and this setting is ripe for the franchises increasingly RPG aesthetic that began with Assassinās Creed Origins and continued with Assassinās Creed Odyssey which had a Greek mythological setting. Norse mythology is just the next logical hot trend to dabble in for this series after ancient Greece; if God of War did it first itās Assassinās Creed gold! (Technically Ubisoft did the Nordic thing before God of War with For Honor but, pfft, semantics.) Familiar setting aside, Assassinās Creed is unique enough to differentiate itself from Kratosā heartfelt story about parenting and deicide (though God of War director Cory Barlog joked via Twitter that he is game for a crossover). Itās going to be a while before God of War 5 anyway.
