Command and Conquer Renegades Go Back To Greece

Petroglyph has announced the release of Mytheon, an epic fantasy strategy Quest, but will players be enthralled by a ‘free’ game?

Due out late next year from True Games Interactive/Petroglyph, Mytheon is set to be a hybrid of strategy, action and roleplaying, but with the idea that certain items can be bought in real money through microtransactions.

The game itself will be free to play, but certain items can be bought for a small fee, such as double XP potions, spiffy clothes and other neat effects.

Playing as a hero in Ancient Greece, you will be searching for Powerstones which allow you to create the ‘spells’ of the game, lobbing mighty fireballs or dropping enemies in quicksand. But before long, you will have to leave Chez Dionysus and venture into further lands, where Romans, Egyptian and Viking gods lie in wait.

Many companies have tried to make a fantasy strategy game before (SOE’s ill-fated Lords of Everquest), but these are the guys who crafted Command and Conquer.

It’s going to be a tall order to take on WoW and Guild Wars, who already seem to have this market sewn up; but with Petroglyph(Star Wars: Empire at War/Universe at War), the rebels from Westwood Studios before it was engulfed by EA, you may yet be cheering for them.

As Zeus might say: Even if we, the gods, are abandoned or forgotten, the stars will never fade. Never. They will burn till the end of the time.
