The 1979 cult classic film is getting another videogame adaptation in the form of a beat-em-up for Xbox Live Arcade.
With The Warriors turning 30 later this year, Paramount has decided its time to hold an anniversary celebration. What better way to do that than to launch a video game adaptation for Xbox Live Arcade? Paramount Digital Entertainment will be handling the publishing duties and CTXM is developing the game. They’ve previously worked on other XBLA games like Heavy Weapon and Feeding Frenzy.
So no, this is not an XBLA re-release of the enjoyable 2005 Warriors game developed by Rockstar. It does follow the same basic formula, though. Take a bunch of characters from the movie, throw them in some sidescrolling levels full of other bad dudes to beat up, and have them beat each other up. It seems pretty standard from what we can tell: you punch and kick and occasionally throw out some Hurricane Kick-esque super attacks. And from the trailer we can gather that there’ll be four-player co-op and comic-book style cutscenes recreating famous scenes from the movie. It’s likely that the co-op will be online, since CTXM’s Heavy Weapon featured four-player multiplayer prominently.
Paramount will also be releasing a comic book to celebrate the film’s anniversary.
Seems that 2009 is the year of the sidescrolling brawler, with Atlus’ ridiculous-looking Tokyo Beat Down and the sure-to-rile-up-fanboys Watchmen game also due for release in addition to The Warriors. Can we dig it? We’ll have to wait and see.
