Is A Tomb Raider Movie Reboot Coming Soon?

Remember that recent talk out of Eidos about overhauling Tomb Raider to bring it back to relevance? There’s a rumor going ’round that Warner Bros. may have the same idea for the movie franchise.

Empire is reporting that Warner plans a “reimagining” of the Lara Croft character for a new Tomb Raider movie, changing her origins, love interest and primary antagonist. No details are available yet, but videogaming247 contributed a rumor of its own, suggesting that Megan Fox of Transformers fame will be taking on the lead role. This was quickly debunked by io9, as a spokesperson for the actress simply responded that, “She’s not involved in the movie at all.”

How much truth there is to this is impossible to say, but there’s no question that Eidos was disappointed with the performance of Tomb Raider: Underworld, the last entry in the series. The first two Tomb Raider movies, released in 2001 and 2003, did respectably at the box office but haven’t stood up so well to the test of time. Warner is also a stakeholder in Eidos, and in early December 2008 put in a bid to acquire control of the company. As such, a simultaneous reboot of both the games and the movies doesn’t seem unreasonable.

Whether or not it will actually accomplish anything is a different question entirely.
