The redesigned PS3 has proved a massive hit with consumers around the world, with enormous increases in sales in Japan and the UK.
Sony might just be on track to steal second place from under Microsoft’s nose now that the PS3 Slim has hit the market. Sony sold over 150,000 units in just three days Japan, an increase of nearly 1500% from last week. These numbers actually beat the original PS3 launch, where only around 90,000 units were sold due to problems with supply.
It’s a similar story in the UK, where PS3 sales are up nearly 1000% and the PS3 tops the charts in sales for the first time since January 2008. Software sales have also increased by 17%, putting the PS3 in third place behind the Xbox 360 and Wii.
Andrew House, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, gave this statement: “I think what I’ve heard anecdotally is that this is the point people were waiting for – a redesigned model and, in Euros, a significant price reduction. That’s people’s cue to jump into the business.”
