The Prince Returns in Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands

It looks like Ubisoft is bringing the good ol’ Prince back for another go.

Ubisoft announced today that it is developing Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands for release next year. The title will come to both consoles and handhelds in May 2010.

Unfortunately, details are incredibly sparse at the moment. The Forgotten Sands will return to the Sands of Time storyline that was diverged from in the most recent game in the series, titled Prince of Persia, which was first released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in December 2008. The Sands of Time storyline was told through the previous three games: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones.

The only other details come from Ubisoft’s press release, which states: “Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands will feature many of the fan-favorite elements from the original series as well as new gameplay innovations that gamers have come to expect from the Prince of Persia brand.” From this we can only conclude that there will be spikes, lots of spikes, and probably some kind of time manipulation.

The game’s official website teases a larger reveal at the upcoming Spike TV Video Game Awards, airing on the night of December 12. As much as I hate to plug the event, rest easy in the knowledge that the trailer will probably be up on the internet shortly afterward.
