Modder Crams N64 into a Game Gear

This article is over 14 years old and may contain outdated information

How do you make a handheld version of a retro console? Well, you might try sticking it inside an even more retro console.

This N64 mod, which takes the Nintendo console and stuffs it inside the shell of a Sega Game Gear is kind of hard to describe without making it sound like something from a horror movie. But slightly creepy mental images aside, the N GEAR 64, as modder Evil Nod refers to it, is actually quite a nifty little device.

Nod has taken all the parts that make the N64 work and somehow gotten them to fit into a shell around half the size and included a screen and a controller. It’s not just the basic N64 in there either, there’s an N64 Expansion Pak as well, which was needed to play games like Majora’s Mask and Donkey Kong 64.

The N GEAR 64 is also capable of hooking up to a TV so that others can join in on multi-player games, although that requires a custom built break out box. It’s also kind of portable; as long as you have Evil Nod’s modified Game Gear battery pack.
