El Shaddai Wows Japan With Religious Blue Jean Combat

This article is over 14 years old and may contain outdated information

El Shaddai is in the running for the most gorgeous videogame ever to feature a main character wearing blue jeans.

The first thing I think of when I imagine a hero going up against fallen heavenly soldiers is rarely a guy in a pair of Levis. However, that’s exactly what the main character of Ignition’s El Shaddai: Ascention of the Metatron wears as he battles through a game marked by gorgeous, watercolor visuals.

El Shaddai tells the tale of an average blue jean wearing human caught in war between Heaven and the Fallen Angels. He must take care of the Fallen before a flood washes over Earth, using both his bare fists and a weapon called the Arch.

It’s a third-person action game also with segments of 2D platforming and exploration, and is based on the story told in the Old Testament’s Book of Enoch. If El Shaddai‘s amazing visuals look similar to Okami‘s, that’s because Okami lead character designer Sawaki Takeyasu is working on it.

The game recently won the Tokyo Game Show’s “Future Game of the Show 2010” award, voted on by attendees and then chosen by committee, which as a new franchise is said to be quite a feat. It’s been in development for four years but will hopefully be out by 2011 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
