The game that 1990s comic book fans loved to play together in arcades is coming back on today’s consoles.
Before there was Castle Crashers, there was X-Men. The 1992 Konami classic is one of the most notable multiplayer games to ever hit arcades, with some versions of the machine allowing up to six mutants to fight together against the various forces of Magneto. Now, Konami is reviving the game on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network.
The console version will apparently be an accurate replication of the original. Players will be able to choose from at least the six characters previously featured: Wolverine, Storm, Dazzler, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, and Colossus. Each has their own button-mashing combat style and a unique screen-clearing special move.
The game’s story isn’t hard to explain. The X-Men have to save the world from Magneto. Along the way, the X-Men will mostly take on wave after wave of various robot types, with a sprinkling of anthropomorphic dinosaur. Bosses at the end of each level include the Blob, Wendigo, a bazooka-wielding Juggernaut, and of course Magneto.
X-Men allowed friends to drop into the game at any time, and the XBLA and PSN version will evidently do the same through online play. The game’s trailer also reveals multiple difficulty levels, but that’s the only extra made known so far. The graphics look roughly the same as the arcade version, which looked pretty good in their day anyway, but I’d be surprised if they weren’t updated somewhat. As for the possibility of other bonuses, we’ll have to wait to see if they’re announced later, along with pricing and a release date.
