A designer’s portfolio could reveal when we’ll see the next Xbox.
Microsoft may have already recruited some of those designers it was looking for to help create the successor to the Xbox 360. ZDNet has discovered a portfolio listing that says the development of the next Xbox is already underway and set for release around 2015.
A designer named Ben Peterson, who previously worked as an intern for Intel, writes that he’s currently working on a confidential Xbox-related project at Microsoft. He says the project is a “collaboration with Microsoft’s IEB design group investigating future user experiences and hardware for 2015.”
The date of the project is listed as “March 2011,” meaning it may have been started just recently. There is apparently already work being generated, as he writes that “work samples” already exist. Peterson’s listing is accompanied by a strange image that may or may not have anything to do with his work at Microsoft.
The original Xbox 360 model was first released in 2005, while the quieter, more stable, redesign hit stores in summer 2010. Microsoft has said that Kinect was planned to extend the life of the Xbox 360, and with the motion-sensing device’s overwhelming success it certainly has the potential to do that until 2015. Though another four years is a long time, perhaps it’ll allow Microsoft to do enough R&D to not put gamers through the hell of the “red ring of death” again.
