Japanese PSN Gets Another Final Fantasy Legend

This article is over 13 years old and may contain outdated information

Final Fantasy VI, widely considered one of the best JRPGs of all time, is coming to PSN later this month.

For many gamers, 1997’s Final Fantasy VII was their introduction to the JRPG, and the rich worlds, characters and plots that many games at the time simply lacked. But while FF7 is perhaps the most famous Final Fantasy, those who’ve been with the series longer have a very fond spot in their hearts for Final Fantasy VI, originally released here in the States as Final Fantasy III.

It’s not hard to see why, either. It’s a fantastic game with a great cast of characters, and the Big Bad – an insane, nihilistic clown-jester-thing named Kefka – could wipe the floor with that prettyboy Sephiroth any day of the week. FF7 may be the most popular game in the series, but FF6 is arguably the most beloved.

It’s also now coming to current-gen consoles, by way of Sony’s PlayStation Network – at least in Japan. Square-Enix’s Shinji Hashimoto broke the news via Twitter, setting a release date of April 20th and posting some videos of the game running on a PSP. Judging by those videos, this is the PS1 port of the game, with bestiary, FMV cutscenes and loading times that hopefully aren’t nearly as bad on PS3/PSP as they were on the original PlayStation.

This leaves Final Fantasy IV as the sole PS1 Final Fantasy (in the two anthology collections, that is – they were originally SNES titles) to have not made the jump to PSN. Something tells me that it won’t be far behind.

I can only hope that FF6 makes its way across the Pacific. It’s tied with FFX for my favorite game in the series, and those two games are beaten out only by Chrono Trigger as my favorite JRPG of all time.

And “Dancing Mad,” seen here to the right, makes “One Winged Angel” cry itself to sleep knowing that it will forever be an inferior final boss theme.
