Custom Jeweler Tells Comic Nerds To “Lock That Down”

This article is over 13 years old and may contain outdated information

Are you in love with a pretty girl but you can’t find the words to express your feelings? Maybe you should make her a custom engagement ring to break the ice.

This week’s release of Green Lantern means that there’s a huge number of tie-ins just about everywhere you look. A custom jeweler, Passion Fire Diamonds, has just released a new ad that pays homage to both Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern franchise in general.

The ad is part of a series, “Gotta Lock It Down,” that basically tells average guys that they can convince stunning women to marry them so long as they use a custom ring to express their love. So far, the ads have shown a guy who just cannot say the right thing to his girlfriend, another guy who uses a ring to distract his love from the movie hunks she sees on TV, and this latest one, about a comic nerd who realizes the pretty girl in his store is just as much a Green Lantern fan as he is.

Anyone who grew up identifying as a nerd can probably relate with this commercial: We’ve all met at least one person who’s gorgeous and shares a lot of the same interests as us. And, like the poor guy in the video, a lot of folks never work up the courage to actually say anything to the object of their desire. That said, getting an engagement ring for the girl who you’ve never really talked to is probably counting your chickens before they’ve hatched.

Now, while the overall idea of the commercial is somewhat cute, I’ve got a couple of bones to pick with it. First off, painting all comic nerds as slackers who don’t want to move out of their parents’ home is … Well, it’s a little irritating, to say the least. Secondly, I disagree with the girl’s point about Hal Jordan (Hal is an awesome Green Lantern, though I like Kyle Rayner just fine).
