The “Hunter” multiplayer mode in Crysis 3 looks very cool but just a wee bit familiar, too.
Every shooter needs a multiplayer mode, so it seems, but the trouble is that it’s all been done before. We’ve all deathmatched, we’ve all captured the flags, we’ve all caught the chicken; the challenge for developers who need their games to stand out from the crowd is coming up with new and different ways for us to kill each other online.
Thus we have “Hunter,” a new team-based multiplayer mode for the upcoming Crysis 3 that pits two nanosuit-equipped players – the hunters – against a squad of 14 highly-trained, heavily-armed but not cloaking-device-equipped Cell soldiers. The name of the game is simple: the hunters must kill the Cell troopers, the troopers must survive long enough to be evacuated from the ruins of New York City.
It’s not necessarily the most original idea of all time, a point driven home for the benefit of anyone who missed it by the “come and get me” conclusion – all that’s missing is “I ain’t got time to bleed” – but the implementation promises to be very cool. I’m not sure what kind of staying power it will have, since this kind of game mode takes a lot more effort and commitment than your average three-minute deathmatch stress-reliever, but I’m sure looking forward to trying it.
Crysis 3 is currently scheduled to arrive in February 2013 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
