Tomb Raider sales are outpacing those of its predecessor, according to Crystal Dynamics.
Nearly four years after the reboot rumors first leaked, Tomb Raider launched this week to incredibly positive reviews. Of course, critical praise and commercial success don’t always go hand-in-hand, but according to one member of the Crystal Dynamics team, Tomb Raider‘s sales so far are very encouraging. Sharing the happy news on Twitter, Global Brand Director Karl Stewart announced that one million gamers played Tomb Raider within 48 hours of its launch.
Wow, 1m gamers playing in less than 48hrs! @tombraider fans, you’re AMAZINGHearing some stores are running low..more copies are on the way!— Karl Stewart (@CrystalDKarl) March 8, 2013
The tweet isn’t supported by any official announcement from Square Enix or Crystal Dynamics yet, so it’s a bit unclear, but most likely means one million copies of Tomb Raider have been sold so far. If true, that means it’s far outpacing Tomb Raider: Underworld, the disappointing sales of which resulted in layoffs at Crystal Dynamics.
It’s pretty early to call, but all signs point to the Tomb Raider reboot becoming a successful endeavor. As a longtime fan, I’m really enjoying Lara’s reimagined origin story, and I’m hopeful that Crystal Dynamics can maintain this level of quality as the series progresses. If and when Square Enix releases any official sales figures for Tomb Raider, we’ll let you know.
