Spelunky XBLA Comes “Home” To The PC

Spelunky, the most addictive game you’ll ever hate, is coming to Windows PCs this summer.

There are two types of people in this world: Those who have played Spelunky and those who wake up every morning, content in their belief that the universe is a truly just, loving place. Spelunky may be the prototypical example of our modern urge toward recapturing the “hardcore” gameplay that was so prevalent in the 80s and 90s, but it’s also very, very hard. That’s part of its appeal, fans would say, and while I’d agree (and adore the game), I’d be lying if I claimed that each and every Spelunky gameplay session didn’t end with me swearing audibly at my television.

Normally when I’m a fan of something niche like Spelunky, I like to push it on as many people as possible. That’s one of the best aspects of my job. Unfortunately, Spelunky has long been exclusive to the Xbox Live Arcade, drastically whittling down the number of people I can potentially convince to play the thing. Luckily for us however, developer Mossmouth has just revealed plans for a PC iteration of Spelunky.

To wit:

This summer, PC owners will be able to play the XBLA reboot of Spelunky that won the 2012 IGF “Excellence in Design” Award, as well as Game of the Year Awards from publications like Gamespot and Edge. Spelunky will launch on Steam and GOG, followed shortly by the Humble Store.

As you can see there’s no solid release date for the PC version of Spelunky beyond a nebulous “this summer.” We’ll bring you word on that (as well as other crucial details like pricing) as soon as Mossmouth reveals such info.
