PlanetSide 2 will cater to soldiers both on console on PC, but they’ll be on different battlefields.
The PlayStation 4 already has multiple free-to-play MMOs in its line-up, including a port of the formerly PC-exclusive PlanetSide 2. Even though players on both the PS4 and the PC will be able to participate in the war for Auraxis, it looks like they won’t be sharing the same frontlines. PlanetSide 2 creative director Matt Higby recently explained that cross-platform play isn’t possible due to the technical challenges of parallel development.
“Because of the update cadence,” Higby says, “and the additional steps you have to go through to be able to release an update on the PlayStation network, we’re not going to be able to keep our servers in sync, so you won’t be able to just play with the same people. They might be a week behind in terms of patching, or a day behind or whatever it ends up being, and we can’t really have that.”
Fear not, brave soldiers of the New Conglomerate and those other two factions – the PlanetSide 2 console experience won’t be completely divorced from its PC origins. Even with differing patch schedules, Higby noted that the character format is identical on both systems, so it should be possible to port a character between platforms with ease. While that doesn’t necessarily confirm that character transfers will be implemented, it’s certainly a meaningful wink and a nudge in that direction.
