Plants vs Zombies 2 has been played for a combined 9000 years, generating billions of plants, suns, and zombie waves in the process.
The original Plants Vs Zombies was an astonishingly successful game, finding re-releases on every modern gaming platform and uniting the opposing armies of hardcore and casual gamers. So when Plants Vs Zombies 2 was announced, the question wasn’t whether it would be successful, it was how successful would it be. A mere two weeks after Plants vs Zombies 2‘s international release, we have that answer: Insanely, stupidly successful. PopCap has posted some initial figures, the most important being that Plants vs Zombies 2 has been downloaded almost 25 million times, exceeding the combined lifetime downloads of Plants vs Zombies 1.
That’s not the only impressive number PopCap has achieved. According to the figures, Plants vs Zombies 2 players confronted 5 billion zombies waves, which would trample a great many lawns if not for the 10 billion plants protecting them. All told, Plants vs Zombies 2 has been played for a combined 81 million hours, a length of time that technically rivals the history of human civilization. (Which is perhaps appropriate, given Plants vs Zombies 2‘s time-traveling focus.)
Perhaps more impressive is the fact that these figures were generated solely on iOS devices, specifically the iPhone and iPad, without charging users a penny for the download. If Plants vs Zombies 2 makes the same leap across platforms that its predecessor did, and keeps its free-to-play status, we’re going to need a lot more zeros to keep track of those zombie-killing hours.
