Wayward Manor Teaser Offers Spooky Glimpse at Neil Gaiman’s First Game

The adventure game from the author of Sandman and Coraline promises mysteries in a haunted manor.

Sandman creator Neil Gaiman and independent studio The Odd Gentlemen released a teaser trailer today for the upcoming adventure game Wayward Manor. The announcement added that the game would be available on Steam. The game is slated for release for PC and Mac in December 2013, but no firm release date has been given. The game will also be released for iOS tablets, but at a later date.

As a restless ghost in the manor, you must terrify the new, living inhabitants until you drive them from the house that is rightfully yours. The secret fears of your new tenants, the circumstances of your own death, and other mysteries of the manor were teased by Gaiman in an interview with Mashable. On the subject of your death, Gaiman says, “I don’t want to give anything away but it’s safe to say you were killed in the 1880s and you were killed for a reason.”

The game has an unusual funding scheme, similar to Kickstarter but through the Wayward Manor store. A preorder of a digital copy of the game is $10 USD, while higher priced packages offer t-shirts, art, and even dinner with Neil Gaiman if you have $10,000 to spend. Gaiman calls Wayward Manor “the first part of the story” in the introductory video for the game. The success of Wayward Manor will determine if Gaiman and The Odd Gentlemen will be able to continue the story.

The Odd Gentlemen is an independent game studio founded in 2008. The debut title for the studio was The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, a puzzle game where you play a time-traveling pie thief. The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom is available for Xbox 360 and PC. The studio has also released Slap Happy Sam’s Stageshow, a multiplayer dueling game on PlayStation Home, and Flea Symphony, a musical puzzle game for iOS. Wayward Manor will be the first videogame for Gaiman, whose comic books and novels are critically acclaimed.
