The Heavenly Sword movie brings the epic of Nariko to movie-lovers next spring.
You’ve been thinking about Heavenly Sword recently, haven’t you? Maybe it came to mind recently because, with the PS4 launch coming up, you’ve been thinking about going back to some of those early PS3 games you haven’t played in years? (Or maybe it’s because you saw this headline.) It’s funny that you should be thinking about the game, because there’s a Heavenly Sword movie coming out!
The Heavenly Sword animated movie will be available for digital download next spring, Sony revealed today on the PlayStation Blog. The film, animated by Blockade pictures, is Sony’s first attempt at making anything related to Heavenly Sword since the game was released on PS3 in 2007.
First announced earlier this year, the Heavenly Sword movie will be, for the most part, a retelling of the story from the original game. Fringe’s Anna Torv stars as the voice of player-character Nariko and with Alfred Molina as the villainous King Bohan. The movie also stars Thomas Jane and, of course, Nolan North. If you haven’t played the game, here’s a quick overview, courtesy of Sony:
“Heavenly Sword is a dramatic tale of revenge that sees Nariko (Anna Torv), a fiery red-haired heroine, embark on a quest of vengeance against the invading King Bohan (Alfred Molina) and his army. Once considered the failure of a legendary prophecy, Nariko must wield a sword that was ultimately meant for another. This ancient Heavenly Sword, once belonging to a powerful deity, can never be wielded by a mortal without slowly and inevitably killing them. For Nariko, it’s a race against time to avenge her clan before her life is irreparably overtaken by the omnipotent Heavenly Sword.”
While the Heavenly Sword movie will be available everywhere digitally on day one, the movie will be shown on the big screen in “select global markets.” According to Eurogamer, the movie won’t be released on DVD until after the movie has left theaters.
